Box Sets

Introduction

If you are just interested in seeing all of the different releases, feel free to scroll past this introduction.

Over the years the show has been released 'complete' in several box sets, currently the only way to get all three seasons and Fire Walk With Me is with the limited edition 'From Z to A' Box set, this set, however, is very expensive to get now so here are some significantly cheaper soloutions:

I would recommend getting the 'Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery' (which includes Season 1 & 2, Fire Walk With Me and The Missing Pieces) Blu-ray/DVD set and the 'Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series' Blu-ray/DVD. I believe this is currently the cheapest way to get the entire show.

TEM

Another method is getting 'Twin Peaks: The Television Collection' on Blu-ray/DVD (which includes seasons 1-3) and an individual copy of 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me' from the Criterion Collection release or a regular DVD. My only problem with this method is that the Criterion Collection release of Fire Walk With Me is quite expensive and it works out to be cheaper by getting it with Season 1 & 2 on 'Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery' for around the same price as getting the film on its own.

If you are curious about differences in visual quality, John W McKelvey did an excellent write up with image comparisons on the site DVD Exotica.

Hopefully the series will be re-released with the film and 2017 series soon. What follows is a comprehensive list of every box set released for the show on VHS, Blu-ray and DVD.

VHS

Although not the ideal way to watch the original series, there is certainly a sense of authenticity and nostalgia to watching the show on VHS. Be aware that VHS releases will not have subtitles making them less accessible to the hard of hearing.

NTSC

WorldVision Twin Peaks Special Collectors Edition Set (Complete Season 1 & 2.)

Released in 1993 for $89.95.

Can be found on eBay in the realm of $60-$90.

This release consists of 6 tapes, each containing a few episodes, housed in a wonderful sleeve. For more information, pictures of the beautiful sleeve design and a brilliant write up, check out Steven Miller's article 'Twin Peaks – Worldvision Home Video VHS Set From 1993' on 'Twin Peaks Blog'.

Season 1 was also released on it's own as a set with a case, more information in the Season 1 page.

PAL

'screen entertainment' Welcome To Twin Peaks Complete Series Wooden Box Set

Released in 1991 for an unknown price.

Can be found on eBay in the realm of £100-£150.

This PAL release of the entire series amusingly comes in a wooden crate-like box that has a sliding door to reveal the tapes. It contains the feature-length pilot episode (often named the 'International Pilot') Northwestern Passage and every episode of the first two seasons across 11 tapes.

NTSC-J

I don't speak Japanese so I am unable to aquire more information about this release but it appears to contain Seasons 1 & 2 across 14 tapes. It appears that this company also released Northwestern Passage. If you know any more information about this release please contact me.

Presumably released somewhere in 1991-1994.

DVD

This is a fantastic and cheap way to watch the series if you don't want to spend the extra money for the blu-rays, I strongly recommend the 'Definitive Gold Box Edition' released by PlayBack. This section is the first to feature multiple 'variations/editions' of the same set, I will try to cover all variations.

Region 1/NTSC

Definitive Gold Box Edition

Released in 2007.

This release includes Season 1 & 2. It is contained in a cardboard sleeve, According to a Wikipedia article, after being initially released in 2007, the set was re-released in 2013 in a more compact box, and again in 2017 in a single DVD case.

Original/Embossed Shiny Release (10 Discs):

This original 2007 release has a shiny gold-foil look to it's cover. The inside of the original release has a plastic tray for each disc which you flip through like a book, it also came with a set of post-card prints. You can get a closer look at the original release in this video by Zaranyzerak on YouTube at 7:35.

2013 Re-release:

The 2013 re-release does not contain the post cards but has the same essential appearence.

2017 Re-release:

As shown in the image above, this release is made of very cheap and fragile plastic that breaks easily.

The Television Collection

Released October 15th 2019.

The Television Collection includes Season 1-3 in a thick plastic DVD case.

Region 2/PAL

Blu-ray

Aside from the 4K Pilot episode and the episode 'Got a Light?' from Season 3 which were released in the 'Z to A' set in 4K, Blu-ray is currently the highest definition Twin Peaks is available to watch in. The show looks fantastic and has been remastered in HD.

Region Free

The Entire Mystery

The Entire Mystery is perhaps the best release if you want the entire 'original' (pre 2017) series AND the film 'Fire Walk With Me' AND it is the first release to feature 'The Missing Pieces' (90 minutes of deleted scenes for Fire Walk With Me).

Released in 2014

Pictured above is the original 'limited/deluxe' release of 'The Entire Mystery'.

it was later re-released in a sleeve containing a standard blu-ray multipack as pictured above. This release was distributed by Universal Pictures (UK) Limited. This region-free re-release also has the PAL BBFC rating in the lower right corner of the artwork.

Twin Peaks: From Z to A

Considered the 'ultimate' Twin Peaks collection, 'From Z to A' contains all 3 seasons and Fire Walk With Me. This was a limited run release and is now quite expensive second-hand.
